Located in the rocky area of Wabara, northwest of Al-Madinah al-Munawwarah and about 5 km from Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, the mosque was originally known as the Mosque of Banu Salimah, named after the tribe in whose territory it was situated.
It was here that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while leading the Dhuhr prayer, received the revelation to change the qiblah from Al-Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem to the Kaaba in Makkah.
Since then, it has been called “Masjid al-Qiblatayn”, meaning the Mosque of the Two Qiblahs.
