The Umrah Pilgrimage and Its Spiritual Significance
A blessed journey of purification undertaken to touch the Kaaba and be a guest of the Most Merciful, offering an opportunity for spiritual renewal that can be performed at any time of the year.
◈ What is Umrah?
Meaning "to visit" in the dictionary, Umrah is a religious act of worship performed at any time of the year outside the Hajj season (specific days of Dhul-Hijjah). It is fulfilled by entering the state of Ihram, performing Tawaf around the Kaaba, performing Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, and exiting Ihram by shaving or trimming the hair.
Also known as the "minor pilgrimage," this virtuous act of worship is a special visit where a Muslim takes a brief break from worldly preoccupations, rests their heart and soul in the spiritual climate of the Kaaba, and seeks refuge in their Supreme Lord with the hope of purification from sins.
What are the Rulings and Conditions of Umrah?
The ruling on Umrah is a confirmed Sunnah (Sunnah Mu'akkadah) according to the Hanafi and Maliki schools of thought, while it is obligatory (Fard) once in a lifetime according to the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools. A person who will perform the Umrah worship must meet the following conditions:
- Being Muslim, Sane, and of Age (Puberty): As in all acts of worship, this is the basic condition of obligation for Umrah.
- Being Free: The person must have full freedom of travel and worship.
- Financial Capability (Istita'ah): Having a halal income to cover the expenses of the Umrah journey and providing financial security that will not put their own or their family's livelihood in distress upon return.
- Physical Health and Route Safety: It is required that there is no physical excuse preventing travel to the holy lands and that the travel route is safe.
◈ The Fundamental Virtues of Umrah Worship
This blessed journey to the holy lands holds great rewards and spiritual gains for Muslims:
1. Expiation for Sins
With the glad tidings of our Prophet (PBUH), an Umrah serves as an expiation for the minor sins committed between it and the previous Umrah, leading to a person's spiritual cleansing.
2. Spiritual Renewal
Getting away from the stress of daily life and worldly rush to rest the heart, and engaging in contemplation in the presence of the Kaaba, refreshes a person's faith and submission.
3. Being a Guest of the Most Merciful
Those who travel to the holy lands are considered the guests of Allah (Dhuyuf ur-Rahman). The reward for their sincere worship and the tears they shed there is infinite mercy.
◈ The Conditions, Pillars, and Obligations of Umrah
There are certain stages and rules that must be followed for the Umrah worship to be fulfilled. Umrah has one condition, one pillar (rukn), and two obligations (wajib):
1. Ihram (Condition)
Entering the state of Ihram by making the intention for Umrah and reciting the Talbiyah is the condition of Umrah. Men wrap themselves in two seamless pieces of white cloth, while women wear their normal modest clothing. During this period, certain behaviors such as applying perfume and cutting hair are forbidden.
2. Tawaf of the Kaaba (Pillar)
The main pillar (rukn) of Umrah is Tawaf. It means circumambulating the Kaaba seven times (shawt) accompanied by prayers, starting from the corner of the Hajar al-Aswad (Black Stone). It must be performed in a state of wudu (ablution).
3. Sa'i and Shaving/Trimming (Obligation)
After Tawaf, the reverent walk performed between the hills of Safa and Marwah, consisting of four trips forth and three trips back, is called Sa'i. Afterwards, men completely shave or trim their hair, and women cut a small amount from the ends of their hair to exit the state of Ihram.
Key Differences Between Umrah and Hajj
- Ruling: Hajj is obligatory for those who meet the conditions. Umrah, according to the majority of schools of thought, is a Sunnah.
- Time: While Hajj can only be performed on specific days of the year (the month of Dhul-Hijjah); Umrah can be performed at any time of the year outside the days of Hajj.
- Locations and Rituals: Umrah consists only of entering Ihram, performing Tawaf around the Kaaba, and performing Sa'i. In Hajj, in addition to these, there are locations and rituals such as Arafat, Muzdalifah, Mina (stoning the devil), and animal sacrifice.
- Duration: While Umrah is an act of worship that can be completed within a few hours, Hajj rituals are spread over several days.
◈ The Spiritual Dimension of Umrah
Umrah is a spiritual migration that a person makes into their own inner self, heart, and essence. Taking off the clothes of status and rank, wrapping oneself in the same white shrouds, and turning to Almighty Allah with the call "Labbayk, Allahumma Labbayk" is the greatest scene of equality and submission in the world.
Looking at the House of Allah (Baitullah), greeting the Hajar al-Aswad, and visiting our Prophet (PBUH) in Al-Masjid an-Nabawi gives indescribable peace to the hearts. The Umrah worship is a unique opportunity to be cleansed from the dirt of sins, to repent for mistakes made, and to return to life by opening a brand new, blank page.
Our Prophet (PBUH) said the following about the reward of Umrah:
"An Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the next. And an accepted (Mabrur) Hajj brings no less a reward than Paradise." (Bukhari, Muslim)
