It is the name of a region located between Mecca and Ta’if, as well as a small mountain in that area. The mountain is also called “Jabal al-Rahmah”, meaning “Mountain of Mercy.”
The Mount Arafat area is a sacred place where Allah accepts prayers. Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) and Eve (peace be upon her) met here, Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) met with the chief of angels Gabriel (peace be upon him) here, and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) delivered a sermon to his Companions at this site.
