In Mecca, Muzdalifah is the place located between Arafat and Mina, where pilgrims perform the standing (Wuquf) ritual after the Arafat day during Hajj. The word literally means “to approach” or “to draw near.” It is also referred to as “Jam”, signifying a gathering or assembly.
During Wuquf, performing the Maghrib and Isha prayers together is considered obligatory (wajib) according to the Hanafi school of thought. Staying in Muzdalifah until Fajr (dawn) is considered Sunnah, while performing Wuquf between Fajr and sunrise is wajib. (Ibn Abidin, Istanbul 1984, II,511)
